Konkola Copper Mines supports a father's struggle to keep his little girl alive
A grim fate awaited Takondwa Phiri - a 2 year old toddler with a bad heart condition. The Ventricular Septal Defect condition caused her to suffocate due to lack of oxygen, food and energy and back-flow of blood. This was further causing complications like accumulation of fluids in the lungs, which were impeding her normal body functions like breathing. Her father, Dominic Phiri, tells us her story.
Every day I watched Takondwa suffer helplessly as I couldn't afford the cost of taking her abroad for a surgery. But, learning of her condition, Konkola Copper Mines Plc (KCM) volunteered to help. They not only sponsored my daughter's travel to India, but also paid the entire bill for her life saving surgery! She underwent a successful 6 hour surgery wherein the defects were rectified.
After the operation, there has been tremendous improvement. Takondwa is now able to walk and eat properly, breathe normally and her heart rate is also normal. She is now gaining weight as opposed to the state she was in before the operation.
Takondwa today is growing up like any other healthy child and is living her life completely.
