Getting better all the time
Over the last three years, our business at Vedanta Resources has more than doubled in size, with strong management fuelling our performance for 2010-11. We recognise that this kind of success also brings with it significant challenges.
With 53 operations across four continents and increasingly demanding requirements for transparency and disclosure, it is now more vital than ever that we further strengthen our global approach to sustainable development.
Reflecting best practice
This is why the international company, Scott Wilson was commissioned last year, to give us a template for improvement. Their recommendations now provide the cornerstone we need to deliver a fully integrated, consistent and global approach to sustainable development reporting that fully reflects industry best practice.
We want to go even further – and I have set five additional priorities that are already driving our sustainable development programme. These are to:
– embed sustainable development into every aspect of what we do
– improve our health and safety performance for a safer, more secure and healthier
environment for every employee and contractor
– contribute further and in a more targeted way to local communities
– continue to manage and minimise our impact on air, water and land
– maintain a dialogue with stakeholders to help us all understand what needs to be done to
be responsible towards society and the planet.
Achieving this will take a great deal of hard work, but we believe that this will ensure we remain on a continuous journey of improvement.
We are fully committed to staying true to our vision and values, both in meeting the world’s growing demand for raw materials, and minimising our environmental and societal impacts.
I look forward to keeping you updated with our progress.
