The Power business of Vedanta Resources is owned by Vedanta Limited which is one of the leading power producers in India with a capacity of 9,000 MW.
Vedanta Ltd's Power operations include a 2,400 MW (four units of 600 MW each) thermal coal-based commercial power facility at Jharsuguda with all four units currently operational. The Jharsuguda 2,400 MW power plant operated at a lower Plant Load Factor (PLF) of 39% during FY 2015-16 due to lower market demand. At BALCO, the first 300MW IPP unit of the 1,200 MW power plant commenced commercial production in July 2015, and the second 300MW IPP unit acheived commercial production in March 2016. Consequentially, during the year we achieved a total of 12, 121m kwh in sales.
The company’s power business also include Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vedanta Ltd. TSPL had signed a power purchase agreement with the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) for the establishment of 1,980 MW (three units of 660 MW each) thermal coal-based commercial power facilities. Two of the units are already functional, with the second 660MW unit starting commercial production in December 2015. The two units, operating at 80% availability, together supplied 2,792 million units to the Punjab State Electricity Board. The third unit was synchronized during March 2016 and is expected to achieve commercial production during FY2017. The full ramp-up will significantly increase our commercial power volumes.
We are also one of the leading wind power producers in India with a capacity of 273.5 MW, commissioned by Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), and we have a 100 MW power plant at MALCO Energy Limited situated at Mettur Dam in Tamil Nadu in Southern India.
