Geo-textiles - our new approach to residue management
Geo-textiles are thin permeable materials consisting of coir fibres interwoven with nylon filaments to provide support and strength. Initial experiments using geo-textiles was conducted with the technical support of Coir Board, Leraloa. The desired strength to withstand the monsoon was developed after trials were conducted over three years.
Geo-textiles reduce the impact of rain on the dump surface, preventing erosion and conserving moisture encouraging better plant growth. Use of geo-textiles is now an integral part of our dump management and reclamation procedures at many of our locations.
Nav Chetna - “a world-class company needs world-class minds’
BALCO recently initiated this project and, in the year to 31 March 2008, 944 of our personnel participated. It is a three-day experiential learning programme targeted at all employees. It aims to rekindle the desire to excel and bring about a cultural transformation within the organisation. It includes psychometric tests, self-realisation exercises, sessions on self-motivation, lateral thinking projects, learning new problem-solving methodologies, education about managing conflict and teaching about team and group dynamics.
At the end of the course, the participants commit to a qualitative improvement in their work through improved production and productivity, improved inter-personal relations, better safety awareness and teamwork. The effectiveness of the programme is measured after three and six months post-completion.
