Vedanta operates several bauxite mines within the aluminium operations at Balco and Malco. Vedanta Alumina is a new operation that is being established in the state of Orissa in eastern India. The operation is being established with capacity of 1.4 mtpa, but initially will produce some 1mtpa. Around half of the alumina will be sent to the expanding aluminium facilities at Korba, part of Balco. The remaining alumina will be available for sale to third parties or to feed future aluminium expansion. There is a short link required to the main railway line, which will then allow easy access to the port at Vizag and export markets.
The alumina project in Orissa has a budget of some US$800m and is due to commission in March 2007.
