The final output of the refining process is in the form of copper cathode. In 2005 - 2006 production in India exceeded 273,000 tonnes of copper cathode. Some 61% of the cathode was converted into copper rod and 64% of net sales was from exports. The production of copper produces several by-products, the most significant being phosphoric acid, used as fertiliser. The smelter has been expanded in April 2005. This will increase production capacity in India to 300,000 tpa. Konkola Copper Mines was acquired in November 2004 and the figures below include the five months to March 2005.
