The aluminium division of Vedanta is divided between two companies, MALCO and BALCO. BALCO is based in central India and MALCO is in the south. BALCO is the larger with capacity of 350,000 tpa, compared to 40,000tpa at MALCO. MALCO is an integrated operation, with its own bauxite mines. BALCO is a partially integrated operation as the commissioning of it's new aluminium smelter providing significantly increased capacity has resulted in 60% of alumina requirements being sourced from third parties. Bauxite is converted to alumina and then on to aluminium. There are facilities to produce rolled sheets and other value added products.
The recent commissioning of the new aluminium smelter at BALCO has increased Vedanta's total aluminium capcity to 390,000 tpa. The alumina for the expansion will be purchased from third party sources.
Vedanta is the 3rd largest supplier of aluminium in India, with a market share of 24% in 2005-06. Demand for aluminium in India is dominated by electrical transmission, consumer durables and transportation and consumption of aluminium in India remains low by international standards.
